Small Businesses Not Safe from RRP Non-Compliance Fines

Since its implementation back in 2010, businesses large and small have been fined for failing to abide by the lead safety requirements set forth by the Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule. The RRP Rule requires contractors remodeling an area greater than six square feet in a home built before 1978 to test for the presence of lead in the paint. If lead is detected, remodelers must notify the homeowner, contain hazardous dust as much as possible, and meticulously clean the remodeled area in order to comply with the RRP Rule. Every containment action must be documented and kept on file for a minimum of three years.

The implementation of the RRP Rule stirred up quite a bit of controversy within the remodeling community. Most remodelers were confused about what exact steps they needed to take to comply with the Rule. Some complained that the Rule caused an unfair extra expense for their businesses. Many contractors were not aware of the RRP Rule at all. This unfortunate lack of communication has not prevented the EPA from prosecuting violators of the RRP Rule. Violations are steep; as much as $37,500 per violation, per day.

According to a new article on http://www.remodeling.hw.net/, small businesses are in no way protected from incurring steep fines for violating the RRP Rule. The companies that have been fined thus far are a mixture of large and small companies, primarily located on the East Coast. Interestingly, one of the fined companies trains and certifies contractors in lead-safe renovation.

If you own a remodeling business and are curious about whether you are fully complying with the RRP Rule, there are several resources that may be able to help you. Start by checking out the EPA's RRP Rule Guide to figure out how the Rule applies to your business. Here is a PDF version for small businesses. For your lead containment and dust control needs, check out Builders Site Protection's Lead Ready lead containment kit andthe  Dust Control section of the website.

Builders Site Protection also has "Renovation Checklists" available to help you through every step of your project. Give Heather a call at 866-788-6886 or email sales@buildsitepro.com for more information.

Non-residential projects are still slightly stronger than residential, but the gap is closing as home building starts to pick up speed again. Here in San Diego, Builders Site Protection is pleased to note that residential construction is beginning to show signs of life as projects that have been on hold for years start back up. How is construction faring in your area? Have you noticed any improvement in your local construction economy? Let us know!

Surface Protection Expert Heather Checks Out Construction and Renovation Projects in Europe

You think your construction project is taking a long time? The Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain has been under construction for over 120 years! Surface Protection Expert Heather just returned from a European vacation and noticed that construction and renovation projects there often take decades or even longer to complete. Renovation projects for structures of historical significance such as Il Duomo in Florence, Italy, and Saint Peter's Basilica in Vatican City are constantly being renovated, cleaned, and reinforced. In such projects as these, builders are careful to use surface protection and dust control measures. Surface protection prevents damage to fragile, antiquated buildings and dust control protects interior artwork from being covered in grime. Dust control also prevents the droves of tourists from inhaling potentially toxic dust!

What do you think are some of the biggest differences between construction projects in the USA and in Europe? Feel free to comment!

Supporting Small Business: Why It's a Smart Move for Contractors to Buy Local Vs Large Box Stores

Surface Protection Expert Heather Ley just had an article published about why it is better for contractors to support small local businesses rather than large box stores when purchasing construction supplies. Although prices can be a bit higher than places like Home Depot or Lowes, nothing beats the customer service of a small, family owned business like Builders Site Protection!

Cloth vs. Poly Latex Shoe Covers: Which is Best for Your Project?

Builders Site Protection offers two different types of shoe covers; polypropylene (cloth) and poly latex (plastic). Both are made from high-quality, tear-resistant material and prevent the spread of dust on construction sites. As a builder, you want to choose the best product for your job site. So which shoe cover is best for you?

Poly Latex (Plastic): These heavy duty shoe covers are 9 mils thick and reusable. The diamond-pattern non-skid bottom provides superior slip protection to the polypropylene shoe covers. The poly latex booties are water proof so they may be used on wet surfaces. They are more durable than the cloth booties and are tear-resistant.

Polypropylene (Cloth): Cloth shoe covers
are disposable and best for short-term use. They are great for customer service calls and show customers that you care about keeping their home or office dirt-free. Cloth booties are not waterproof, so use them on dry floors. Although they have a slight skid-resistant backing they are not as slip resistant as poly latex shoe covers. Polypropylene shoe covers do not scratch delicate surfaces and are great for soft hardwood floors such as pine.

If you have any further questions about Builders Site Protection's shoe covers, give Pat or Heather a call at 866-788-6886 or email us at sales@buildsitepro.com.
