EPA Announces Lead Poisoning Prevention Week – October 24-30th

The Environmental Protection Agency has declared this week to be National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week to raise awareness of the effects of lead poisoning in young children. Lead causes serious health risks including brain/nervous system damage and hearing and vision impairment. Even a low level of exposure can have severe and lasting effects resulting in developmental problems such as learning disabilities and decreased intelligence. Remodeling contractors can do their part to reduce lead poisoning in children by adhering to the strict guidelines of the EPA’s Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule. The rule requires contractors to minimize dust, contain the work area, and clean up thoroughly after the project is completed.

Builders Site Protection’s Lead Ready™ kit is the perfect solution to ensure RRP Rule compliance. The kits include the personal protection, area containment, and clean-up supplies necessary to prevent the spread of toxic lead dust throughout the home or childcare facility. The kit is available in a single-person or five-person plus package. For more information about the Lead Ready™ kits or to place an order, visit www.buildsitepro.com or email me at sales@buildsitepro.com.

New Stormwater Guidelines for Construction Sites

Beginning February 1, 2010 the EPA began enforcing new stormwater runoff standards for construction sites disturbing an acre of land or more. The new regulations are meant to ensure that precipitation does not cause erosion or wash construction materials, chemicals, and solvents into nearby waterways. Runoff from construction sites has negative effects on water quality and can heavily impact the health of aquatic ecosystems.

This is the first of a series of tightened stormwater pollution regulations. Starting August 1, 2011 the EPA will also require construction sites to sample stormwater discharges to gage pollutants in runoff and may also, depending on the outcome of ongoing legislation, require turbidity limits as well. Also going into effect on August 1, 2011 are requirements for construction companies disturbing 20 or more acres to meet a series of non-numeric effluent limitations. This means that builders will be required to: control erosion and sediment to minimize the discharge of pollutants; stabilize soil during clearing, grading, and other earth-disturbing activities; dewater trenches and excavations; minimize pollution from wastewater, pesticides, herbicides, and other harmful chemicals. Discharge of wastewater from the washout of concrete is prohibited.

The gals at Builders Site Protection keep up to date on the very latest developments that affect the construction industry – we are here to help builders and contractors meet EPA regulations and stay informed. We will continue to keep you posted as new developments arise!

Builders Site Protection Employees volunteer at the Tour de Fat bike rally

Builders Site Protection employees Heather and I volunteered this past Saturday at the San Diego Tour de Fat, a celebration of biking.  Heather worked the button making booth while I was screenprinting on T-shirts.  All proceeds from the event went to help the San Diego Mountain Bike Association.  Wearing our "Do you use Protection" T-shirts was a hit as protection is also needing during some mountain bike events.

Look for us at many other charity events around the country!  Even when building is slow it's still possible to build a better community.      -Pat

EPA EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR LEAD PAINT TRAINING

Great news for remodeling contractors! The EPA announced on Monday that it will delay enforcement of the RRP lead safe laws until October 1st, 2010. Contractors are now allowed to register for certification programs by September 31st and training must be completed by December 31st.

The EPA stated that this extension is only designed to give firms more time to file the necessary paperwork and allow contractors more time to enroll and complete the required training courses. There will be strict enforcement of the RRP lead safe laws after the extended deadline to protect children and families from the dangers of lead poisoning.

If you are a remodeling contractor looking for all of the supplies you need to meet the RRP lead containment laws, go to our website: www.buildsitepro.com and check out our Lead Ready® kits! We have a single-person discounted kit as well as a larger five-person kit. Builders Site Protections' Cabinet Foam a huge hit on new Hospital project requiring protection

A visit to the new UCSD Thorton Hospital in San Diego shows how well the popular Cabinet/Multi-purpose foam works!  DPR Construction is using the foam to protect damage-prone paneling in patient rooms during construction.  As seen in this photo, quick cut-outs for electrical sockets and equipment panels made application of the protection  a breeze.  For the project, DPR construction is using both the 18" size and 30" size rolls and anticipates needing quite a bit before the project is finished.

Any you thought this was only good for cabinets....!

Hope to see you on a job site soon,
Pat

Builders Site Protection Helps Customers with Lead Abatement Regulations

New Lead Abatement Rules for Contractors: The Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule

Beginning on April 22nd 2010, contractors performing work that disturbs lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978 must:
  • Be EPA certified
    • To become certified, contractors must submit an application and fee payment to the EPA
    • Firms must have one or more ‘certified renovators’ assigned to jobs where lead-based paint is disturbed. To become certified, a renovator must successfully complete an EPA or State-approved training course
    • All renovation workers must be trained to use lead safe work practices either on-the-job by a certified renovator, or by becoming certified renovators themselves
  • Follow specific work practices to prevent lead contamination
    • Contain the work area
      • The RRP rule requires that the work area be protected by plastic sheeting that extends a minimum of six feet in all directions from the location where the pain will be disturbed.
    • Minimize dust
      • Close and cover air vents in the working area
      • Use floor protection to prevent dust spread and put all tools and supplies on protective sheeting before you begin work
    • Protect yourself
      • Wear protective clothing such as disposable shoe covers, gloves, safety goggles, and a painters hat to protect yourself from exposure to dust and debris
    • Clean up thoroughly

Builders Site Protection has all the supplies you need to safely renovate homes, schools, hospitals, and child care centers with lead-based paint. To check out our products, visit our website at http://www.buildsitepro.com/
